Good morning, Brilliant Leader Reader
Welcome to this Week's Dose of Operational Strategy.
Two weeks ago, we talked about transitions. Client onboarding, client offboarding, team onboarding, team offboarding. Every one of those business process points to where work and information move from one person to another, and every one of those tasks carries risk when there is no structure behind it.
Did you know that delegating is simply another transition in your business? You're moving work from one person to another.
When you hand off a task to someone on your team, you are moving work from your hands into theirs. Without a solid documented process to support that transition, you are essentially just hoping for a successful outcome. Hoping they understand what you meant. Hoping they know the steps you didn't think to explain. Hoping the result looks the way you pictured it.
Hope is not a strategy.
Hope is what happens when structure is missing.
Most business owners delegate the same way they were taught to delegate, which is to say, they were never taught at all. They explain a task once, verbally, under time pressure, and then they wait to see what comes back. When the result is wrong, the instinct is to take the task back rather than build the system that would have made the handoff work the first time.
That instinct is exactly what keeps a business owner buried in their own operation. Every task that gets pulled back rather than being structured properly becomes one more thing only you can do. Over time, that adds up to a business that cannot function without you, which is the opposite of what delegation is supposed to create.
Real delegation requires the same thing every transition requires. Clear documentation of what needs to happen, what the outcome should look like, and where the handoff points are. When that exists, delegation stops being a gamble and becomes a repeatable process. Your team can execute consistently because they are not guessing. You can step back because the work no longer depends entirely on your direct involvement. This is not about trusting your team less. It is about giving them what they need to succeed without having to read your mind.
If you are ready to look at how delegation is actually functioning inside your business, let's talk. Schedule a 15-minute complimentary strategy fit call with me using the link below.
